Three Kazakh Athletes Reach the Asian Games Final
Ayana Kazbekova, Yuliana Petrova & Diana Chshedrova advance to the women’s modern pentathlon final at Aichi-Nagoya 2026
Kazakhstan will have three representatives in the women’s modern pentathlon final at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. Ayana Kazbekova, Yuliana Petrova and Diana Chshedrova secured their places after the women’s semifinals on 16 September, giving Kazakhstan three athletes in the field that will compete for the medals. Kazbekova and Petrova competed in Semi-final A. Kazbekova finished fifth with 1,363 points, while Petrova placed ninth with 1,345 points. In Semi-final B, Chshedrova finished fifth with 1,356 points. The results put all three athletes among those progressing to the final. It is a significant stage in a competition that demands versatility across several very different skills.

A Sport Built on Variety
Modern pentathlon combines fencing, obstacle, swimming and laser run. The laser run itself brings together running and shooting, making the event a test of speed, endurance, precision and composure. The sport has also undergone important changes for the 2026 season. Swimming has been reduced from 200 metres to 100 metres freestyle, while the laser run now includes five visits to the shooting range rather than four. The running distance remains five 600-metre laps. The format means that athletes must adapt quickly from one stage to another.A strong performance in the fencing phase can provide valuable points. The obstacle race then demands speed and coordination, while the swimming stage rewards efficiency in the pool. The competition reaches its final phase with the laser run, where running and shooting are combined. It is this mixture that makes modern pentathlon distinctive.
Kazbekova’s Strong Semifinal
Ayana Kazbekova delivered Kazakhstan’s highest placing in Semi-final A.She finished fifth with 1,363 points, recording 17 fencing victories, a swimming time of 1:06.40, an obstacle time of 35.51 seconds and a laser-run time of 12:40.41.Her performance placed her among the leading athletes from the semifinal and secured her passage to the decisive stage. The result also reflects the importance of maintaining balance across all four stages. No single discipline determines the final outcome, and athletes must manage the transition from technical events to the physically demanding closing race. For Kazbekova, the semifinal provided a solid foundation for the final.
Petrova Secures Her Place
Yuliana Petrova took the ninth qualification position in Semi-final A, finishing with 1,345 points. Her semifinal included 14 fencing victories, a 100-metre freestyle time of 1:03.13, an obstacle time of 38.22 seconds and a laser-run time of 13:15.24.Finishing inside the qualification places ensured that Petrova would continue into the final alongside her teammate. For her, the next stage represents another opportunity to put together a complete performance against the athletes who have progressed from both semifinal groups.

Chshedrova Advances from Semi-final B
Diana Chshedrova produced another strong result for Kazakhstan in Semi-final B.She finished fifth with 1,356 points, recording 19 fencing victories, a swimming time of 1:03.19, an obstacle time of 38.73 seconds and a laser-run time of 13:28.45.Her fifth-place finish gave Kazakhstan its third place in the women’s final. Chshedrova has also had a notable 2026 season at junior level. UIPM records show that she won the women’s individual final at the 2026 AMPC U19 Asian Championships in Yogyakarta in May. She later finished 21st in the U19 World Championships in Madrid. Those results provide useful context for her progress during the year, while her Asian Games semifinal performance now places her among the finalists at senior continental level.

The Final Awaits
The women’s modern pentathlon final is scheduled for 20 September at Anjo Sports Park. The official Aichi-Nagoya 2026 venue information lists modern pentathlon at Anjo Sports Park on 20 September, with the women’s competition scheduled in the morning. The programme includes fencing, obstacle, 100-metre freestyle swimming and laser run. The final will bring together the athletes who emerged from the two semifinal groups. For the three Kazakh representatives, the task is now straightforward: reproduce their best qualities across every stage and remain consistent throughout the competition.
Preparation for Aichi-Nagoya
Kazakhstan’s modern pentathlon programme has also continued to develop domestically. Results from the country’s 2026 national championships show Chshedrova, Kazbekova and Petrova among the athletes competing at senior level. In the women’s team competition in February, Chshedrova recorded 1,384 points, Kazbekova 1,351 and Petrova 1,320.The three athletes therefore arrive at the Asian Games final with experience of competing together within Kazakhstan’s national programme. Their routes to the final have been different, but the destination is the same.
Three Athletes, One Decisive Stage
The semifinal stage has already established an important fact for Kazakhstan: three athletes remain in the women’s modern pentathlon medal race. Kazbekova enters after finishing fifth in Semi-final A with 1,363 points. Petrova follows in ninth with 1,345, while Chshedrova advances from Semi-final B after also finishing fifth, with 1,356 points. Now comes the decisive stage. At Anjo Sports Park on 20 September, the three Kazakh athletes will face the full sequence once again fencing, obstacle, swimming and laser run with the final standings determining the Asian Games medals. For Kazbekova, Petrova and Chshedrova, the semifinals have opened the door. The final will determine where their Aichi-Nagoya journey leads.
