A Festival Designed for Future Innovators ALEM Tech Fest stands out for its immersive and hands-on approach to learning. Unlike traditional academic settings, the festival creates an environment where students actively engage with technology, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges. From the very first day, participants were thrust into a series of high-energy competitions and collaborative projects. Events such as the globally recognized FIRST Robotics Competition ecosystem—including FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge—formed a major highlight. These competitions encourage students to design, build, and program robots capable of completing complex tasks, fostering both technical expertise and teamwork. Equally compelling were contests like RoboCup Soccer and Rescue, where autonomous robots demonstrated their ability to navigate unpredictable environments, simulating real-world rescue missions. Meanwhile, drone racing competitions added an element of speed and precision, showcasing how emerging technologies are being integrated into competitive and industrial applications.

Blending Education with Experience

One of the defining features of ALEM Tech Fest is its emphasis on experiential learning. The Hour of AI initiative allowed students to dive into the fundamentals of artificial intelligence through interactive challenges. These sessions were designed to simplify complex concepts, making AI accessible and engaging for young learners. Beyond structured competitions, participants collaborated on advanced projects involving satellite design and robotics engineering. These activities not only broadened their technical understanding but also introduced them to interdisciplinary problem-solving—an essential skill in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. The festival’s format ensures that students are not passive observers but active creators. Whether programming a robot, designing a drone system, or experimenting with AI models, each participant gains firsthand exposure to the tools and technologies shaping the future.

Building a National Innovation Ecosystem

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Bakhtiyar Mukhametkaliev emphasized the importance of such initiatives in strengthening Kazakhstan’s innovation ecosystem. He highlighted that investing in young talent is key to sustaining long-term technological growth. According to Mukhametkaliev, ALEM Tech Fest aligns with the government’s broader vision of integrating digital skills into education from an early stage. By encouraging participation in global-standard competitions and fostering a culture of innovation, Kazakhstan aims to create a workforce capable of competing on the international stage. This vision is already taking shape. The festival serves as a meeting point for students, educators, industry experts, and policymakers, enabling knowledge exchange and collaboration. It also reinforces Kazakhstan’s role as a regional leader in STEM education and digital transformation.

The Central Asia FIRST Championship: A Global Gateway

At the heart of the festival lies the Central Asia FIRST Championship, a flagship event that connects local talent with the global robotics community. Part of the internationally renowned FIRST movement, the championship promotes engineering thinking, creativity, and teamwork through hands-on challenges. The journey to this stage has been rigorous. Since October, more than 1,200 teams from across Kazakhstan participated in regional qualifiers. From this pool, over 450 teams advanced to the national stage in Astana, competing for a chance to represent their country internationally. The stakes are high. The top 50 teams will qualify for global competitions, with 14 teams earning the opportunity to travel to Houston for the prestigious FIRST Championship world finals. Meanwhile, 36 other teams will compete in international events across countries such as Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates, China, Greece, and South Korea. This global exposure not only enhances the participants’ technical skills but also provides invaluable cultural and professional experiences, preparing them for future careers in technology and innovation.
